So here goes:

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden (2 copies)
Around the World in Eighty Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, all by Jules Verne, in English and German,
The Ultimate Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter, and The Plot Thickens, Harry Potter Investigated by Fans for Fans (both by Galadriel Waters)
and, by popular request, several volumes by Peter Ustinov: Gott und die Staatlichen Eisenbahnen, Über das Leben und andere Kleinigkeiten, Ich und Ich, Peter Ustinovs geflügelte Worte.

Once again many thanks for your support! As promised, funds which you have helped to raise will also be used to help carers of the disabled to have a well-earned break, possibly here on Lake Constance: we are in negotiation with the CEO of the Wilf Ward Family Trust to find the best arrangements. Some of you will have read about the controversy unleashed among the Christian community by the theme of magic in the books. Opinion is both strong and divided.
For those of you who like to scratch below the surface, I can thoroughly recommend John Granger's book The Hidden Key to Harry Potter. I have read around this subject quite a lot and have found this to be the most thought-provoking so far.

Granger does two things in his book: first, he shows the enormous depth, consistency and richness of detail that JK Rowling has put into the series. There is great significance, for example, in her choice of names for her characters. Aunt Petunia, to name but one, is named for a flower traditionally said to signify resentment, and we know from the very first book how much Harry's Aunt Petunia resented his mother Lily (a name signifying purity, incidentally).

Second, Granger puts forward his case for arguing the 'High Road' case that the Harry Potter series ranks among traditional Christian fiction of the Inkling school, alongside Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. He argues convincingly that the books are meant to be read symbolically.

I found his book well-researched, erudite, an exciting read, but gratifyingly free of cant. You may not always agree with the conclusions he reaches (that's part of the fun), but I can safely say it will exercise the right mental muscles. A must-read for the serious Harry Potter fan!

Order your copy here: for UK readers:

For US readers:

Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince

Dear Bookworms!

Don't forget to pre-order your copy of "The Half-Blood Prince" through the Bookworm Club site!
